Job Description
Position Summary:
The Veterinary Assistant supports the DVM and CVT team by managing patient flow, assisting with appointments from start to finish, and ensuring accurate medical records and communication. This role is essential in maintaining efficiency, organization, and a high standard of patient care.
Core Responsibilities:
Level 1 – Outpatient Support
- Follow the DVM throughout appointments and anticipate needs
- Follow direction from DVMs, CVTs, and Level 2 and 3 VA’s.
- Facilitate appointment flow and maintain schedule efficiency
- Obtain patient weights (if not completed by CSR)
- Take patient photos (if not completed by CSR)
- Prepare exam rooms for appointments
- Ensure each appointment is completed from beginning to end
- Prepare necessary supplies and vaccines for each visit
- Provide safe restraint for examinations and procedures using Fear Free techniques
- Assist in obtaining samples alongside Level 2 or 3 VA’s or CVTs
- Input charges accurately into the system
- Press “Ready-to-Go-Home” button when appropriate
- Complete EMRs unless otherwise directed
- Restock and clean exam rooms after each appointment
- Manage prescription refill requests (digital and in-hospital)
- Coordinate with other outpatient assistants to maintain workflow
- Assist with overflow of DVM appointments as needed
Level 1 – Inpatient / Treatment Support
- Assist with opening and closing of the treatment area
- Set up surgical and dental suites for procedures
- Provide care for hospitalized patients per DVM whiteboard instructions
- Assist with medication administration under direction of CVT/DVM
- Monitor hospitalized patients and communicate concerns to CVT/DVM team
- Assist with medical callbacks (level dependent)
- Prepare laboratory samples and basic diagnostics
- Maintain cleanliness, organization and stocking of treatment area
- Maintain surgical equipment and prepare surgical instruments for next use.
- Restock and maintain clinical supplies in treatment and inpatient areas
- Assist CVT and Level 2/3 Assistant teams with inpatient care needs
- Assist with recovery and handling of surgical/dental patients as needed
Level 2 – Advanced Technical Support Skills
- Assist CVTs and DVMs with more advanced technical procedures, including:
- Blood draws and sample collection
- Injections and medication administration
- Fluid therapy support
- Basic laboratory preparation and processing
- Anal gland expression
- Nail trims and Fear Free handling visits
- Support anesthesia preparation and patient positioning under CVT guidance
- Provide advanced Fear Free restraint techniques in more complex situations
- Support treatment planning execution as directed by CVTs and DVMs
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift throughout the shift
- Ability to safely handle and restrain animals of varying sizes
- Comfort working in an environment with sick, injured, or stressed animals
Qualifications
- Fear Free Certification (required or willingness to obtain within a defined timeframe)
- Strong understanding of animal handling and restraint techniques
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced veterinary environment
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Effective communication and teamwork abilities
- Ability to follow direction from DVMs and CVTs
- Willingness to grow into higher-level technical skills over time
Schedule
Facility hours:
- Monday–Thursday: 7:30 AM – 8:30 PM
- Friday: 7:30 AM – 5:30 PM
- Saturday: 8:00 AM – 2:30 PM
Shifts will be scheduled within these hours and may include evenings and Saturdays as needed.
